After the final roster for Team Germany was revealed in late January, forward Thomas Kink, who captains the Adler Mannheim back in the DEL, set up a group conversation to connect with his new national teammates. According to CBC’s Ray Ferraro, he named the group chat “Operation Gold” as a joke, not thinking that his team would go deep in the tournament at all. Interestingly enough, the German team went on to outlast Switzerland in the qualifying round, take out Sweden in the quarterfinals, and even knock off Canada in regulation during the semifinals.
With the gold medal game against heavily-favoured Russia, the Germans put up a fight as well. After giving up a last-minute goal in the first period, the Germans responded with one of their own off a bad bounce in the third period to tie the game at a goal apiece. When the Russians scored again, the Germans immediately answered with a wicked shot from Dominik Kahun to tie the game at two again. Germany struck again late in the period, this time off another blistering shot from Jonas Müller, to give the Germans a 3–2 lead in the final minutes. As the Russian team scrambled to put up another goal, they took a needless penalty with two minutes left. The prospect of being just a minute away from a gold medal might have gotten on the Germans’ nerves, as they gave up a soft goal to the Russians with 40 seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.
The Germans were not prepared for four-on-four hockey in the extra frame. After the Germans took a penalty, the Russians easily boxed in the Germans on the penalty kill and scored on a one-timer off the stick of Kirill Kaprizov, as the Russians recovered to win the gold.
In the Men’s Four-Man Bobsled, there was another tie as the German team led by Nico Walther matched times with the South Korean team led by Kim Eun-jong for silver. The German team led by Francesco Friedrich took gold.
Norway’s Marit Bjørgen won gold in the Women’s Cross Country 30 km Classic, bringing her gold medal total to eight. She has won a total of 15 medals across a span of five Winter Olympics.
